History1967 - A group of inmates in the Colorado State penitentiary, who were committed to break the cycle of substance abuse and the criminal behavior that supported their addictions, founded Cenikor Foundation, Inc. in 1967. 1970 - Mayor Louie Welch invited Cenikor to open a treatment center in Houston to address an increasing need for a reliable and effective drug treatment program within the city. 1972 - Cenikor met the challenges and expanded its operations to Houston. Cenikor has grown from its first facility located in the original Jefferson Davis Hospital, to the William Penn Hotel on Texas Avenue, to our current 89,000 square foot facility on 19.9 acres in Deer Park, which houses over 150 residents and serves over 400 individuals annually. 1978 - The Winn Dixie Corporation donated two buildings located at 2209 S. Main Street in Fort Worth to help Cenikor establish a treatment facility. After renovations, one of the buildings in transformed into a livable facility that can house 180 residents. 1980 - Cenikor established its Corporate office location in Houston, Texas. 1995 - Cenikor opened an outreach office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in a space provided by the city located at the Leo S. Butler Community Center. This office referred over 150 people to the Texas facilities each year. 2000 - An outreach office was opened in New Orleans. 2001 - Cenikor opened a residential facility at 2414 Bunker Hill Drive in Baton Rouge, Louisiana that can currently house 170 residents. 2005 - The New Orleans Outreach Office was demolished by hurricane Katrina. 2007 - Cenikor celebrates forty-years of providing supportive residential therapuetic treatment services in the treatment community. Presently, Cenikor serves over four hundred (450) residents in three facilities, one in Deer Park, one in Fort Worth, and one in Baton Rouge. Cenikor has touched the lives of over 40,000 men and women since its founding in 1967. It has grown from a small cadre of men yearning for freedom from the seemingly endless cycle of drug abuse and incarceration to three treatment facilities serving 100's of people each year.
