John Whitmire

Mayor of Houston

Meet John Whitmire, Houston’s 63rd Mayor and former Dean of the Texas Senate. From shining shoes as a young boy to advocating for his community, John’s journey is one of resilience and service. Raised amidst challenges like domestic abuse and displacement, he learned the importance of compassion early on.

Inspired by his parents’ dedication to public service, John embarked on a career path aimed at helping others. His tenure in the Texas House and Senate saw him champion district representation and advocate for marginalized communities. Notably, he fought for LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and immigrant rights.

A pivotal moment occurred when John and his family were robbed at gunpoint, propelling him to focus on public safety. As chair of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, he implemented reforms balancing toughness with intelligence, including the Sandra Bland Act and grand jury reform.

Now as Mayor, John brings decades of experience and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of Houstonians. With a proven track record of getting things done, he’s dedicated to tackling challenges and ensuring a brighter future for all.

Since 1967, Cenikor has helped individuals achieve sobriety, and, more than that, stay better for a lifetime. Last year, we were able to treat more than 12,000 people, over half of whom were indigent, including adolescents. Our mission is clear: to save lives through affordable, evidence-based services.
