Cenikor Announces Shelter Program Transition

Amarillo, TX, May 15, 2024—Cenikor, a leading nonprofit behavioral health and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment network, announces the transition of its Amarillo shelter program effective June 15, 2024. Despite the end of the shelter program, Cenikor remains dedicated to serving individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their financial circumstances, through a robust continuum of care.

Since its inception in 2013, the shelter program has provided a foundation for better health and better lives. The program has positively impacted over 1,000 individuals, offering a safe haven on the journey toward recovery and stability. This achievement would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of Cenikor’s partners and the Amarillo community, for which the nonprofit is profoundly grateful.

“We are extremely thankful for Dr. Perry and Diann Gilmore’s vision of improving individuals’ lives and our community,” said Bill Bailey, President and CEO of Cenikor. “Because of the work we have done together, there are now more options and opportunities available to those living with substance use disorder in Amarillo. Uniting as a community, we have made a vast improvement in the resources available. That mission continues today.”

Cenikor remains committed to delivering comprehensive behavioral health services to all individuals. The foundation’s continuum of care includes detoxification, residential treatment, outpatient programs, medication-assisted treatment, and recovery housing. This evidence-based model ensures clients receive the highest level of care needed, fostering sustainable recovery and better treatment outcomes.

Cenikor reassures the community that its dedication to serving individuals from all backgrounds remains. Since Amarillo Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs (ARAD) joined the Cenikor family in 2019, the organization has significantly increased the number of clients served by 425%, reaching 1,115 clients last year. This growth underscores Cenikor’s ongoing commitment to building a stronger, healthier community.

“Cenikor was a good choice for the community. They had the means to provide treatment to everyone—those who have insurance and those who cannot afford to pay,” said Dr. Perry Gilmore, former CEO of ARAD. “Back in 2007, we tried getting someone to open a treatment center with no luck. We’re grateful that Cenikor came to Amarillo and provides high-quality treatment for the entire community.”

“This is what Perry and I dreamt of from the beginning—to have inpatient, affordable treatment in Amarillo,” added Diann Gilmore, Executive Director of Downtown Women’s Center. “Our partnership with Cenikor works well. If a woman is willing to work and get through the inpatient side of Cenikor, we can be certain she means business and wants to work our program.”

As the organization navigates this transition, Cenikor expresses profound appreciation for the partnerships established with its community partners. The support has been vital in the collective efforts to improve the lives of individuals living with substance use disorder.
