Fort Worth, TX Each year the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP) selects one person to receive their coveted Counselor of the Year award. Earlier this year TAAP chose Cenikor’s very own Pamela Karnes. Karnes, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Tarleton State University and has seen the effects of addiction first-hand, has worked for Cenikor for almost five years.
Describing her passion for addiction recovery counseling, she said, “What brought me to the field and to Cenikor was a strong desire to assist people in their road to recovery.” She added, “My past certainly gave me some insight. I am a person who has been in long-term recovery since November 2, 1999. I have a strong family history with Cenikor. I have two brothers, both of whom graduated Cenikor, and were also employed by Cenikor. I truly believe in the mission and values of Cenikor.”
As an organization who shares Pam’s devotion to helping others, Cenikor provides short-term and long-term substance use disorder treatment programs for those needing better health and better lives. Reflecting on her initial time in a long-term recovery program like Cenikor, Pam said, “Those months were invaluable to solidify my lasting recovery. I believe the longer the treatment, the better the outcome. Thirty days might heal the body but long-term heals the mind and the soul.”
Desiring more skills and knowledge to continue helping Cenikor patients, Pam is currently enrolled in the Tarleton State University Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master’s Program. She concluded, “My goal is to have my #Mastersbeforemedicare!”
